| Posted: 14 Mar 2011 12:47 AM PDT Although ASUS has already announced some new gaming notebook models based on Intel’s Sandy Bridge and the company release ASUS U30S, which packs a Sandy Bridge Core i5-2410M processor, 8GB of RAM, NVIDIA’s 520M graphics with Optimus and a eight-cell 84Wh battery……..
Asus U30S packs a nice looking body, great features and the latest Intel SandyBridge hardware platform. All these make it a goody many would love having on their desks.Asus U30S is for sure a solid looking device. Covered in fancy charcoal aluminum, it's both stylish and solid built. Lid cover bends only a tiny bit and screen hinges looks solid, unlike on other Asus notebooks we saw before. Inside, there's the same aluminum finish, but the area around the screen is still made from glossy plastic so will scratch and catch fingerprints.Asus U30S measuring 1.3-1.4 inches in thickness and as for weight, it's around 4.0 – 4.2 pounds. On the bottom part of this laptop you get easy access to both hard-drive and memory which is great if you plan for upgrades. As for trackpad, it comes with a smooth aluminum finish and is decently sized. Of course, it's not as big as on a Macbook, but it's enough to comfortably use it even for multi-gestures. Click button is fairly good as well, although separated buttons for right/left click would have been welcomed. Specs:
Pretty standard 13.3 inch display on this laptop, LED backlit and with 1366 x 768 px resolution. Typical problems seem on most displays used on Asus laptops are present: glossy finish and glossy bezel around (although quite a narrow one), medium to poor viewing angles (although not as bad as on others, the U36J for instance) and the fact that the screen doesn't bend to more than 130 degrees on the back, as the battery placement prevents it.Definitely the most important upgrade this Asus laptop brings is the new generation hardware inside, on Intel's SandyBridge platform. There's a powerful Core i5 processor clocked at 2.3 GHz with HyperThreading, 3 MB Cache memory and 35 Wh TDP. Plus the new generation graphics: Intel HD + Nvidia 520M + Optimus, just enough to get the extra punch in games and multimedia content. Add 8 GB of memory and a fast 7200 rpm hard-drive and you get a very nice mix.ontent and enough to actually run some games. Still, you do have to remember the 520M is an entry level mobile chipset from Nvidia so don't expect wonders from it.
Pretty much all the things you would need on this one, except for 3G and USB 3.0 . While the first is not a common option on laptops anyway, the second should be on a device launched in 2011. Still, since this is an early sample, we can hope the final Asus U30S will get an USB 3.0 slot as well.As for the others, you get USB 2.0 slots, VGA, HDMI, mic and headphones, card-reader plus Wireless N, Gigabit Lan and Bluetooth 3.0, so pretty much what laptops offer as standard nowadays. There's also an internal DVD-RW optical unit on this one, which is something we don't find too often on laptops in this class. This laptop comes with Windows 7 Home Premium as default and of course a bunch of bloatware preinstalled. Luckily, thanks to that punchy hardware inside, those won't really have any effect on everyday performance, but I do advice getting rid of them asap. Trend's Micro antivirus solution, most of the Asus utilities and the Trials included are the ones to cut of first. But make sure you get a proper antivirus instead, like Avast or Windows Defender.
There's an 8 Cell 5600 mAh 84 Wh battery inside this one, so you probably expect good battery life for the Asus U30S.No exact info on both availability or pricing for this one. Nor do we know if it's going to reach the States or not with this particular name, as the U30S is a model meant for the European market.Asus targets the sub 1000 euros mark with this laptop, so that could be translated for around 1000 bucks in the US. Asus U30S is a proper 13.3 inch laptop for 2011. Solid built, stylish looking, powerful and with proper battery life. The Pros:

| Apple Accepting Red Cross Donation for Japan Through iTunes Posted: 13 Mar 2011 11:39 PM PDT Apple has set up a section on iTunes that allows users to donate between $5 and $200. 100% of the proceeds collected go directly to the American Red Cross and Apple is waiving its usual 30% fee. Apple has updated its direct message from its website: "To those who have been affected by the earthquake and tsunami, we send sympathies from our heart. In this deep sadness, we are praying for the victims and their families." There are other ways you can donate as well. If you don’t mind paying for your donation on your cell phone bill, you can text REDCROSS to 90999. Your carrier will charge you $10 on your account, and send that $10 to the Red Cross. You can also donate from the Red Cross Website. However, it’s not all bad. The Red Cross is still a fantastic organization, and if they don’t use the money to help out with Japan, they will use it to help out in the future. The Red Cross is a non-profit organization, so they’ll be using your donation to help out someone when they need it. Thanks | ||

| Apple Patches SHAtter, Limera1n Exploit On iPad 2 Posted: 13 Mar 2011 10:45 PM PDT Apple patched Geohot's Limera1n exploit on iPad 2. iPhone developer and hacker iH8sn0w has confirmed it. For those who are not aware of Limera1n Exploit, is a bootrom tethered exploit which was make by Geohot aka George Hotz and used in Limera1n Jailbreak Tool to jailbreak iOS 4.1. Later Limera1n exploit was used in GreenPois0n, PwnageTool, RedSn0w and Sn0wbreeze. Here’s what iH8Sn0w has tweeted: From his tweet: Confirmed: limera1n is patched in iPad 2. Muscle Nerd from the iPhone Dev Team also confirmed the SHAtter exploit has been closed by Apple as well. This was discovered as MuscleNerd found the iPad 2 running a bootrom version iBoot-838.3 as compared to iBoot-574.4 found in the first generation iPad. From his tweet: iPad2 bootrom version iBoot-838.3 means it was compiled March'10. Seems geohot guessed right: limera1n was already closed Early testing also seems to show at least one thing SHAtter depends on was gone by March 2010 too This means any early iPad2 jailbreaks will have to be purely userland @fr0st SHAtter can't work at all with the "thing" I referred to gone @hooners96 right. I guess this is a bit of a win for Apple engineers…they fixed both holes long before either exploit was developed. As this is a bootrom exploit, the only way Apple could patch this exploit is by patching it on the hardware. That means, it can't be patched via software update / firmware update. So, all current iOS devices expect iPad 2 can be jailbroken using this Limera1n exploit – Keep in mind that its a tethered exploit. That means you get a tethered Jailbreak for future iOS version and for all iOS device (except iPad 2) unless, someone like @comex provides a hack to change this tethered jailbreak to untethered jailbreak. Thanks | ||

JailbreakMe 3.0 will be an untethered jailbreak for iOS 4.3 which is just discovered by Comex. Here’s the confirmation: From his tweet: GUnitJC :@comex does this mean jailbreakme 3.0 is out now since you just had jailbroken the new iPad 2? @comex:@GUnitJC No, it will take some work to package it into a jailbreak. Same deal as i0n1c There’s is no more information to us whether the exploit used is a userland, or kernel based. For latest update stay with us. Thanks | ||
| Posted: 13 Mar 2011 09:52 PM PDT Panasonic introduce solar table concept with wireless power transmission and will apparently be selling this stylish bit of tech-laden furniture by the end of this year or early next year. This solar-powered wireless charging table will let you charge your Qi-compliant devices simply by placing them on the table………… Panasonic have show a solar-powered wireless charging table which is just a regular piece of furniture with featuring a Solar panel which powers the table so it can charge devices that it comes into contact with. This isn't a device that is available right now but Panasonic seem to be readying the stylish technical table for retail towards the end of this year or the start of next year.Based on QI Wirless Power transmission technology and this table will allow any phones or mobile devices supporting QI technology to be charged thanks to a set of solar panel placed on the center of the table. The only problem with solar panels of course is that if they are covered up then the charging functionality will be rendered useless, at least you can rest your coffee there! There weren't really any specs for the innovatively designed table we agree with the author over at dvice.com that something like this will be ridiculously expensive but funky none the less. While Panasonic staff could not gave us much details on how long it will take you to charge your phone with such table, they however, confirmed that this Solar Table with Wireless power transmission will be available later this year or early 2012 with a set of dedicated QI Batteries that will fit on Panasonic's Mobile phones. | Posted: 13 Mar 2011 07:51 AM PDT Researchers create microscopic disposable camera to see up in your guts and this cheap and disposable micro-camera that is bound to advance image-capturing technology in the field of endoscopy.Microscopic disposable camera is sport a 250 x 250 pixel resolution, are created using a streamlined process in which the lens and sensor wafers are affixed before being cut into a series of 28,000 little cameras…….. Microscopic camera is the work of the Fraunhofer Institute and image sensor company Awaiba and essentially a tiny 1mm square substrate with a layer of image sensors and then a lens layer on top of that giving this camera a total size of 1x1x1mm.t is as large as a grain of salt, supplies razor-sharp pictures and can be manufactured very inexpensively.Endoscopy has gone through amazing advancements in recent years. Microcameras on the tip of endoscopes supply images from the inside of the human body in ever higher resolution which often makes it possible to identify tumors at an early stage. Endoscopes to date have some downsides, since they are expensive and, because of their multiple usages, have to be put through time-consuming and exhaustive cleaning procedures every time they are used. This problem might be solved by a new microcamera that the Fraunhofer Institute for Reliability and Microintegration (IZM) in Berlin, Germany has developed together with Awaiba GmbH and with the support of the Fraunhofer Institute for Applied Optics and Precision Engineering IOF in Jena, Germany. Martin Wilke, a scientist at the Fraunhofer Institute for Reliability and Microintegration, says "we can produce microcameras so inexpensively with our technology that doctors can dispose of endoscopes after using them only once.” This is made possible by a new type of manufacturing process. Digital camera systems consist of two components: a lens and a sensor that transforms the image into electrical signals. Electrical contacts on the sensor allow access to these signals and therefore also to the information of the image. Due to the way they are manufactured, these contacts are located between the sensor and the lens. The sensors are manufactured simultaneously in large numbers, like computer chips. Martin Wilke says, "you have to think of a book full of postage stamps where many thousand stamps are printed in one step. If you want to use them, you have to separate one from another. Instead of a sheet of paper, with image sensors you have a circular disc of silicon that is known as a wafer." About 28,000 image sensors fit onto one wafer and until recently, each and every one was sawed out, wired and mounted on the lens that was still missing. That means wiring them 28,000 times and mounting them just as often. The resolution is 250×250 and it sends its signal over an electrical wire instead of a fiber optic cable. The camera unit is so cheap to make that they consider them disposable for making them ideal for use in the medical world for things like endoscopy. The extremely small size also makes them good for embedded applications like motion detection, security or eliminating driver blind spots and such. The researchers at the Fraunhofer Institute for Reliability and Microintegration have streamlined this process by developing a new way to access the electrical contacts. Now, the wiring process is faster and the entire camera system is smaller. The trick lies in the fact that they do not reach the contacts of each individual image sensor via the side any more but rather, simultaneously with all sensors via their reverse side while they are still connected as a wafer. That means that you no longer have to mount the individual lenses. Instead, you can connect them with the image sensor wafers as lens wafers. Only then is the stack of wafers sawed apart into individual microcameras. Another upside is the fact that it supplies razor-sharp pictures even with very thin endoscopes. To date, the camera systems built into them had to be divided because of their size. The lens was at the tip of the endoscope and the sensor at the other end of the glass fiber strand. The new microcamera is small enough for the tip of the endoscope. It has a resolution of 62,500 pixels and transmits the image information through the endoscope via an electrical cable. Stephan Voltz, who is the CEO of Awaiba GmbH, says that "at 1.0 times 1.0 times 1.0 millimeters, this camera is as small as coarsely ground grain of salt the smallest camera that we are aware of."It is not only medical technology, but also the automotive industry that is interested in this tiny camera. Presently, they are researching the possibility of replacing outside rearview mirrors on cars with microcameras. This would reduce flow resistance and energy consumption. Beyond this, installed in fittings, this camera would be able to calculate the driver's eye movements and prevent him from nodding off for a few seconds. Stephan Voltz is happy about the wide range of possible applications: "Starting in 2012, using Fraunhofer's expertise, we will be able to bring disposable endoscopes to market for only a few euros – we already have the prototype." |
